If you have been looking into having a newborn session then you’ve probably heard the “rule” that newborn photos have to be done in the first 14 days (some actually say 10). The reason for this is that babies DO tend to be sleepiest in those first two weeks, as well as being more easily wrapped into those cute little burrito shapes and posed into little props. I mean, who doesn’t love an adorable angelic looking baby?
However, photographing in those first two weeks sometimes just isn’t possible. We have the sweet NICU babies who need the longer hospital stay. For babies born in the fall/flu season, mamas are more careful taking them out and about (and rightly so), as well as fighting off sickness in their own households so we have many reschedules. There are religions where the baby is kept home in those early days for an alloted amount of time. And let’s not forget that mama is recovering, learning, and sometimes she herself needs extra medical care. Because of this, I am set up to photograph babies of all ages and stages.
These older babies are actually some of my favorite sessions. Those little personalities pop out more and more every day. They’re able to hold a gaze with mom and dad, and even the camera. Sometimes we get little smiles and smirks as they are getting used to the world around them. Yes, they’re going to be awake most likely, and we’ll need to stop for more feedings (they’re growing fast!), but it’s ok! When you come to a session at the studio you get the whole day alloted to you.
Ok, so my official answer to when is the best time for a newborn photo session? Whenever works best for you, mama. Heal, adjust, and give yourself grace in this time of your life. I’ll be here for you when you’re ready. <3
